During

Here are some precautions you should take during an earthquake:

  1. If you are inside when the shaking starts, get under a heavy desk or table or under a doorway.  Stay away from windows.  Remain indoors unless told to leave by a trained first responder or emergency personnel.

  2. If you are outside when the shaking starts, move away from buildings and power lines,  Also watch out for falling buildings.  Remember that stone and masonry facings can loosen and fall away from the upper stories of buildings.  Stay away from cracks in the ground.  Try to get to an open area such as a field.

  3. If you find yourself in a mountainous or hilly area, watch out for falling rocks, landslides, trees, and other debris that could be loosened by the quake.

  4. If you are driving a motor vehicle, safely stop away from buildings, trees, power lines and other vehicles. Stay in your vehicle

After

Here are some things you should do after an earthquake:
  1. Examine yourself for injuries such as broken bones, head injuries and the like.  If you are injured, try to seek medical attention from other people in the area. Look for first responders and emergency personnel.

  2. If you have no injuries or your injuries are minor (carefully examine yourself), try to help others who are injured and stay with them to get medical assistance.

  3. If you have any medical training, such as CPR, ask if you can help or take the initiative.

  4. Be aware of life threatening hazards such as chemical spills or biological agents in the air. (You might consider violent behavior life threatening as well. Notify the authorities if possible. Don't be a hero!.)

  5. Check for food and water supplies.  If you have a particular expertise (such as a being a doctor or nurse), make sure that there are adequate medical supplies on hand.
