During

The following procedures can save your life or prevent injury.
  1. If your clothes catch on fire, do not run, This action will only make it worse. Stop, drop, and roll until the fire is extinguished.

  2. When escaping from a fire, check closed doors for heat before opening them.  Use the back of your hand to touch/feel the top of the door, the doorknob, and the crack between the door and door frame before opening it. Do not use the palm of your hand or fingers to determine the amount of heat on the door because you might singe your hand.

  3. If you cannot open the door, escape through a window.  If you cannot do this, find a white or light colored clothing or sheet and wave it so that firefighters can find you.

  4. If you can open the door, do so slowly. See if fire/smoke is blocking an escape route, If so, exit through a window.  If there is a clear escape path crawl out to safety.

  5. If you are able to close the door, do so. This will delay the spread of the fire.

After

  1. If you are a burn victim or see burn victims, call 911 and cover the burns with cloth (if found). Do not use water! This reduces the possibility of further injury or infection.

  2. Do not enter a residence that smells a smoke.  If you are in the building or house, leave immediately following the steps in the previous section.

  3. Contact your landlord or property manager if the property is damaged.

  4. Do not open a safe or strong box. Each one may hold intense heat for a number of hours. If you open a safe or strong box too soon, the contents could burst into flames.
