About

A flood is water that overruns land. It can be caused by storms, a tsunami, or the breaking of dams or levees. A deluge occurs when land is totally submerged. The water is the inflow of the tide as opposed to the outflow or ebb.

Flooding has to do with the volume of water in the ocean, lake, or river caused by whatever natural or man made disaster causes the water to overflow onto land.

Before

Here are some steps that can be taken to mitigate flooding.
  1. If possible, elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel in your residence if susceptible to flooding.

  2. Put check valves in sewer traps. By doing so, the flood water will be prevented from backing up the drains.
The community should construct  barriers (levees, beams, floodwalls) to stop the floodwater from overrunning the land.

  3. Seal walls in your residence or in buildings using waterproof materials to avoid seepage.

During

Being caught in a flood can be horrendous. Water can destroy anything of value that is not protected. During a flood:

  1. Get up to date information from your radio or TV.

  2. Familiarize yourself about flash flooding. It is likely to happen so move to higher ground as soon as possible. Do not wait for first responders or emergency personnel to tell you.

  3. With regard to flash flooding, be aware of places where flash flooding can occur. These include rivers, streams, drainage channels, and canyons.  Be aware that flash flooding can occur without warning.

  4. If you must leave, secure the edifice. Bring in outdoor furniture. Move important  items to an upper floor (if you have one).
